One of our favorite places to go on a Saturday morning is Castle Rock State Park. It's also where all of the rock climbers, or wanna be rock climbers go too. I don't know how much they love having people like us getting in their space, but, hey, it's a public park!
It's only a mile up to Castle Rock and Liam can do the entire thing by himself. Aaron could too. If we had 2 hours. So, he walks a little and we carry him most of the way up.
I mentioned the rock climbers because Castle Rock is full of sandstone rock formations, both big and small. Lets have a mini 4th grade science lesson and we can talk about how soft sandstone is. And how it gets big dips, holes and caves in it from the rain and wind. Which makes it a haven for little kids who like to climb. Named Liam and Aaron.
There are even rocks that the 18 month old can climb without help.

I wont lie and tell you I don't get freaked out watching my kid scale the rocks like a mountain goat. Or when he goes through a hole that is too small for me to fit and I start imagining how to get him out if he gets stuck. But, my own inhibitions aside, the kids LOVE it.
To top it all off, and maybe one of the reasons we take this drive up the mountain, Castle Rock makes nap times pretty superb.
